We’ve found a balance over the last four plus years living together, but sometimes our competing tastes (and egos) rise and revolt. As such, we’ve had a huge empty wall in out bedroom for the last year and a half in our current apartment. This empty canvas called to me daily with ideas of funky letters, dreams of framed printed fabrics, and a longing for a splash of color. Finding little we could agree on, we decided to create our own art for this space.

The idea was inspired by artwork I saw at a deli when we lived in Portland, OR. The piece featured two pieces of canvas hung vertically. Phrases were stenciled on in perfect unison that created this beautiful string of proverbs your mother would say. (An apple a day keeps the doctor away, the early bird catches the worm…) I loved the idea and wanted to recreate it.

Tom wasn’t keen on the proverbs, but he had a stroke of creative genius and suggested we use some of our favorite song lyrics. The idea was born. We sat together and thought of the lyrics that meant the most to us as a couple, as individuals, lyrics that made us laugh, and lyrics that made us think. After we compiled our list, hubby sat in photoshop and plugged the lyrics in. We decided to go with neutral colors—a rich brown background and two shades of tan lettering. Lastly, we put the lyrics to our wedding song in bright red.

We had the artwork printed on canvas using an online retailer and waited for them to arrive. When they finally did, we were both blown away. It turned out better than we could have hoped for and is a great joint-effort to wake up to every morning. As our family grows and we move on to bigger spaces, we can always add a third or fourth canvas to build the artwork as space allows. Although there is much to love, my favorite thing about our lyrics artwork is how personal it is. It is our soundtrack.

Slight Right 2.0

After a few years of neglect (and a few threatened slight rights from Tom if I didn’t start posting), I’m adding new material to Slight Right! Tom and I originally started a blog to keep in contact with our long-distance friends and relatives. Turns out, we aren’t that interesting and we truly didn’t have that much to say. (Thankfully, facebook exploded and we were able to keep in touch despite our neglected blog.)

I wanted a place to compile all my projects to show-and-tell, and I decided this would be the best place to do so. I have a few years of catching up to do, so stay tuned while I add photos and how-to’s for my labors of love, flops, and trial-by-errors.

It’s good to be back!

"I have bursts of being a lady, but it doesn’t last long."

““I have bursts of being a lady, but it doesn’t last long.””

- Shelly Winters
